Designer Jewelry by Jan McClellan

Fluorite

Fluorite Rough

Fact: Fluorite has an amazing range of colors, shading from greens to violets to pinks. It is rivaled only by tourmaline for color range. It is probably best known for its rich purple color which resembles amethyst. It is a natural calcium floride.

Fluorite is softer than its rivals or we would see it used more in jewelry. I have used a piece of light green fluorite drusy (the crystal formation forming the surface of the stone) for a pendant. I call it Moon over the Mountain. I thought the drusy fluorite looked like a far away mountain; I used an amethyst for the moon.

Fancy: Some believe this stone helps to develop internal vision. It is used mainly as a help against mental disorders and also for meditation and spiritual awakening. Fluorite has a high percentage of fluorine and is believed by some to aid in strengthening bones.
